Back Mountain Echoes – Valtellina recounts its own sound identity
Mountain Echoes, the artistic project conceived by Yuval Avital, officially kicks off. It gives voice to Valtellina through three large sound sculptures, the result of extensive research on the territory and the people and communities that inhabit it. A contemporary choral work that transforms local sounds, languages and memories into a shared cultural experience.
Produced by the CULTURA + IMPRESA Committee, Mountain Echoes is one of the projects selected by the Lombardy Region as part of the Culture Games and is part of the official programme of the Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympics, the extensive programme accompanying the Games that promotes Olympic values through art, culture and the local area.
Between October and December 2025, the artist conducted field research in 25 locations in Valtellina, collecting over 470 audio recordings and involving more than 500 people, including citizens, artisans, students, associations and custodians of local memory. Voices, dialects, gestures, natural sounds and the sounds of daily work are transformed into three polyphonic compositions housed within sound sculptures made from local fabrics and materials.
The works of Mountain Echoes are freely accessible until 15 March 2026 in Sondrio, Bormio and Tirano, together with the widespread photographic exhibition Mountain Echoes in Valtellina: the artist's gaze, which documents the human and relational journey behind the project. From mid-April 2026, the installation will also arrive in Milan, at the Bagni Misteriosi of the Franco Parenti Theatre, coinciding with Miart and Milan Design Week, bringing the voices of the Valtellina mountains to the urban context and creating a symbolic bridge between Alpine territories and cities.
For us, supporting Mountain Echoes means helping to give a voice to a region that preserves a very important cultural heritage. Valtellina, with its communities, traditions and deep-rooted identity, is a place where art and everyday life intertwine naturally.
This project succeeds in transforming this wealth into a shared experience, capable of uniting different people, languages and generations. At BPER, we are proud to support an initiative that promotes local roots and projects them onto the international stage.
