ESG rating (or sustainability rating) is a synthetic evaluation that certifies the soundness of an issuer, a security or a fund in terms of environmental, social and governance performance.

As proof of the Group’s commitment and ongoing improvement in this area, the ratings of BPER Banca are provided below:

Standard Ethics Rating (SER)

Standard Ethics is an independent rating agency active since 2004, promoting the standard principles of sustainability and governance issued by the EU, the OECD and the United Nations.

In 2023, the agency has confirmed BPER Banca's "EE+" rating (range from "F" to "EEE").

Sustainable Fitch

Sustainable Fitch's ESG ratings provide a qualitative and quantitative assessment of an entity's impact on environmental, sociaI and governance matters, according to third-party published principles and guidelines. In 2023 BPER Banca confirmed the "3" rating (range from 5 to 1).

MSCI ESG Ratings

MSCI ESG Research provides an ESG rating to global public companies and some private companies on a basis exposure to industry-specific ESG risks and the ability to manage those risks relative to competitors.

In 2023, BPER Banca received a rating of "AA" (on a scale from "AAA" to "CCC") in the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment.

S&P Global Sustainable1

The S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) is aimed at companies seeking to obtain an independent assessment of their performance, through a wide range of sector-specific economic, environmental and social criteria.

In 2023 BPER Banca scored 60 in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment reflecting an improvement of 7 points compared to 2022.

BPER has been selected as a Sustainability Yearbook Member and listed in The Sustainability Yearbook 2024. The ranking lists companies within the top 15% of their industry that achieved a minimum score falling within 30% of their industry’s top performing company.

S&P Global Ratings
S&P Global Ratings ESG Evaluation (rating solicited) provides a forward looking, long term opinion of readiness for disruptive ESG risks and opportunities.

In 2023, the rating company confirmed the "Adequate" rating (range from"Low" to "Best in Class") to BPER Banca.

The Carbon Disclosure Project is an international non-profit organisation that allows companies to declare and report on their risks linked to climate change and communicate their environmental performance to stakeholders.

In 2023 BPER Banca obtained a rating upgrade to "A-" for the management of issues relating to climate change (range from "D-" to "A").


The Institutional Shareholder Services ("ISS") group of companies supports investors and companies in building long-term sustainable growth by providing high-quality data, analysis and insights. 

In 2023, BPER Banca's ISS ESG Corporate Rating is C-(range from D- to A+).

Morningstar Sustainalytics

Morningstar Sustainalytics is a leading ESG research, ratings and data firm that supports investors around the world with the development and implementation of responsible investment strategies.

In November 2023, BPER Banca received an ESG Risk Rating of 14.7 and was assessed by Morningstar Sustainalytics to be at low risk of experiencing material financial impacts from ESG factors. In no event the ESG Risk Rating shall be construed as investment advice or expert opinion as defined by the applicable legislation.

Moody's Analytics

Moody’s Analytics provides trusted and transparent data and perspectives across multiple areas of risk – credit; climate; environmental, social, and governance (ESG) – to help market participants identify opportunities and manage the continuously evolving risks of doing business.

In 2023, MA’s assessment of BPER Banca’s ESG performance was “Robust” (range from “Weak” to “Advanced”).

The ESG indices in which
BPER Banca is included

MIB ESG (Italian Stock Exchange): is dedicated to domestic blue-chips, with the aim of grouping together large Italian listed issuers with ESG best practices. The index, launched in 2021 by Euronext in collaboration with Vigeo Eiris, combines the measurement of economic performance with ESG assessments in line with the principles of the UN Global Compact.


Standard Ethics Italian Banks Index: assesses the Sustainability of Italian banks based on ESG criteria. The index takes into account several factors, such as environmental and social risk management, business ethics, and transparency. The final index score allows investors to assess the sustainability of banks and make more informed and responsible investment choices.
