Every summer, a miracle of nature takes place on our beaches: the Caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs.
After about 50 days, if the temperature is right, hundreds of baby turtles hatch and head toward the sea, guided by the moonlight. An ancestral instinct drives them on this incredible journey.
Only one turtle in thousands reaches adulthood, due to pollution, illegal fishing, and climate change: every saved nest represents hope for the future.
With National Geographic, we tell the story of caring for the sea
An article in National Geographic recounts the results of our commitment to Sea Shepherd: nests saved, new births and the story of a sea that is once again becoming a home to be cared for.
The environment that needs our help is also his.

Always sensitive to environmental issues, we contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems by supporting Sea Shepherd's Jairo Med.
An entire campaign was created to protect sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead sea turtle, which is increasingly present on Italian beaches every year in search of places to lay their eggs. Providing them with a protected and welcoming environment is the least we can do, given that it is precisely human action that has brought them to the brink of extinction.

The campaign
The turtles, often deceived by streetlights and beach resorts when they are born, injured, entangled in fishing nets, or seriously injured by ingesting plastic as adults, are promptly rescued and helped by Sea Shepherd volunteers, in constant coordination with authorities, research institutions, and relevant associations.
Protecting sea turtles and providing them with a safe habitat to lay their eggs is the mission of Sea Shepherd's Jairo Med campaign, and BPER Banca is committed to supporting it.

The commitment
In 2024, thanks to the contribution of BPER Banca and Banco di Sardegna, it was possible to expand conservation activities for this species along the coast of Sardinia, where Jairo's work had never been carried out.
A team of 11 volunteers patrolled 225 km of beach between June and July and compiled reports on marine weather conditions, human presence, and wildlife—a work of unprecedented scientific value.

A renewed commitment
Also in 2025, BPER Banca and Banco di Sardegna contributed to supporting Sea Shepherd, which patrolled the coasts during the summer months to monitor the nesting of the Caretta caretta turtle.
Females of this species only emerge from the water to lay their eggs, and every year, due to rising sea temperatures and the impact of human activities, these sea turtles are moving further north.
We follow the volunteers' journey and their results.
